lauraroselam:lauraroselam:lauraroselam:lauraroselam:lauraroselam:lauraroselam:Seven Devils, written by me (Laura Lam, author of books like Pantomime, Goldilocks, False Hearts) and Elizabeth May (author of The Falconer), is out in ONE WEEK, August 4th (which is also my birthday)! Each day we’re introducing you to a character from the team. First up: NYX: THE SOLDIER“The Empire treated me like I was just a weapon to aim and fire. I wasn’t any different from the Mors in my hand. You can’t even begin to imagine how many people I killed.“ Former royal guard Likes: shooting people Dislikes: people (with 6 exceptions)The thorns on Nyx’s tattoos, drawn below, are her notable, sanctioned kills for the Empire. She wears two heavy rings that have tally marks carved for covert assassinations. She was programmed to be loyal to the Empire from birth, but later became able to resist the coding. Oner reviewer said: “If you love Star Wars, but always wanted more from Princess Leia, or if you loved seeing the Ladies of Marvel in Endgame come together to protect Peter Parker, then yes. Yes. This is FOR YOU.“ Another: “Fury Road meets Guardians of the Galaxy, and make it queer.” BE GAY. DO CRIME. IN SPACE.Pre-order now! (Help spreading the word also appreciated. Thanks!)DEVIL #2: Today you can meet: CATO: THE PILOT“Do you think this is worse than where I’ve been? I spent years flying in and out of hostile territory.” Likes: his cushy job as a transport pilot Dislikes: the women who took him from his cushy fucking job as transport pilotCato is sort of our Token Dude, though I hesitate to even say that. I sort of think as Cato as Nux in Mad Mad: Fury Road. He has his own character arc and agency. Seven Devils is simply a book that mainly centers women. As I said in a Twitter thread yesterday:I think we wrote this book because we love the women in Star Wars and superhero films but they were, until relatively recently, never the stars of their own stories. (we started in 2015, so long before Captain Marvel released, or even The Force Awakens). And even when they are, they’re still usually far outnumbered by men on the screen/in terms of percentage of spoken dialogue. Even That Moment in Endgame was like 5 minutes of glory in a film where men are calling most of the shots. I remember watching that scene and being moved but also being like YEAH BUT WHERE WERE SOME OF THESE AWESOME LADIES IN THE OTHER 170 MINUTES OF THE FILM? It felt like we were being given this scene to distract us from their absence. Rogue One? Jyn is pretty much the only woman in that movie. There’s still nowhere near parity in terms of gender, much less representation with obviously trans & queer people in those huge franchises. So we wrote the characters we wanted to see into our own universe, and we love them. We hope you do too. BE GAY. DO CRIME. IN SPACE.Pre-order now! Check back tomorrow for the next Devil! Our 3rd SEVEN DEVILS character reveal: RHEA: THE COURTESAN “Rhea would often stare up at the stars and wonder what it was like to travel, what it was like beyond those vast walls.“ Likes: dancing for herself, WANTING TO KISS CLO Dislikes: anything involving violence; she is v nicePre-order now! Check back tomorrow for the next Devil!Today’s SEVEN DEVILS character reveal: KYLA: THE LEADER “I make the difficult, ruthless choices so we can still fight." Likes: when a mission goes smoothly and her operatives don’t give her any fucking sassDislikes: when her operatives give her too much fucking sassLike Nyx and Cato, Kyla was originally a soldier for the Empire whose programming glitched. She and her brother formed a new resistance group after similar movements failed. Their work in special ops made them uniquely qualified to lead a more shrewd, espionage-based movement.Kyla is trans, FYI!Pre-order now! Check back tomorrow for the next Devil! Art: Dan dos SantosOur next devil!ARIADNE: THE ENGINEER "She didn’t know how to interact with anything but the practical thought process coded into the Oracle’s mainframe that punished her for inefficiency. Ariadne was just a girl. To a computer program a thousand yearsold, she was replaceable.”Ariadne is SEVEN DEVILS’ resident Precious Cinnamon Roll. She’s a child genius, entirely engineered to the specifications of an ancient AI who raised her in isolation. She’s been secretly aiding the resistance for years, and helped Nyx and Rhea escape from the Empire.Ariadne is autistic, with experiences based on Elizabeth’s own autism. I LOVE HER SO MUCH. I just want to hug her and tell her everything will be okay. Too pure for this world. Pre-order now! Check back tomorrow for the next Devil! We are down to our last two SEVEN DEVILS characters! Today it’s: CLO: THE MECHANIC "If I ever see ye ’gain, I’ll drain ye t’ the dregs.” LIKES: rebuilding engines. Sassing Kyla. KISSING RHEA.DISLIKES: Mostly? Getting shot at. Happens all the time. Also Eris.Clo is the only member of the crew not genetically engineered. Like all other natural-borns, she was raised in a densely populated, labyrinthine slum called the Snarl (think East End London during the Victorian era, or the Kowloon Walled City). Natural-borns are not programmed, so they’re controlled by other brutal means.Grab your copy! First week sales are especially important and help signal to the publisher that yes, sapphic, queer Guardians of the Galaxy does have an audience! Even in the middle of a pandemic. Last one! Long post is complete. OUR LAST DEVIL:ERIS: THE P̶R̶I̶N̶C̶E̶S̶S̶ REBEL "She was still the Servant of Death, and always wouldbe. Didn’t matter which side she fought on—Empire or resistance—killing was dirty work.”Likes: Screwing over her family. Dislikes: Clo, mostly. When a mission goes wrong. Also: pesky feelings. One of our favourite things about Dan Dos Santos’s illustration of Eris is that it shows her past/present identities. Eris was the heir of the Tholosian Empire, a position not passed down through lineage, but earned through surviving duels with her brothers (and killing them all).Pre-order now! This book releases August 4th, 2020. We hope you enjoy meeting our Devils and seeing them SMASHING THE PATRIARCHY! Your help spreading the word, reviewing, purchasing, borrowing from the library–all of it makes such a difference, especially now. This is my second book released in the middle of a pandemic (check out Goldilocks if you’d like THE HANDMAID’S TALE meets THE MARTIAN), after literal years of no traditional book releases. I thought 2020 was the year my career would get a nice rebirth and now…who knows. All I can do is keep writing my stuff and hope it finds its people. BE GAY, DO CRIME. IN SPACE. -- source link
