auntiewanda:andreii-tarkovsky:Gaycation - “USA” Here’s the thing: this isn’t just a trans issue.We’re constantly told we have to treat transwomen as women, and yet many tanswomen will behave as if issues that have plagued women for ages are somehow unique to them.There are many black and Latina women living in poverty who have to resort to prostitution. And yes, resort, because despite what suburbanites with their safe webcam nude shows tell you “sex work” is not just any other job. Most people, most women, in porn and prostitution didn’t choose it because they like it or they thought it would be a fun career choice. It’s because their only choices are that or homelessness. That or starving. Some are bought and sold into it at a young age and have no means of escape. They are murdered at the same or even a higher rate than trans prostitutes. Of course, men don’t like to know this so we have to pretend it isn’t true.Speaking of men, the United States prison system is abysmal. Many men are raped and killed within this institution. People will talk about the issue of transwomen being raped with grim solemnity, and rightfully so, but when rape happens to a “cis” man our culture treats it like a good laugh.How many times have you seen the implication of male on male prison rape played for laughs in a film or on a television show? It’s even in our common vernacular, with people casually making jokes about being “put in a cell with bubba” or men making other men their “bitch”. Transwomen should absolutely be housed separately from the rest of the prison population like any other especially vulnerable inmate, but the real solution is prison reform not setting a precedent of housing male individuals in female prisons based on nothing but subjective, unfalsifiable self-reported self-identifies.The people who suggest this would like us to forget about criminals such as Michelle “Robert” Kosilek, who strangled his wife with a wire (it took her somewhere between 3 to 5 minutes to die), put her body in her car, left the car in a mall parking lot, took a taxi home and calmly had dinner with his step-son. He then called the police to report her “missing” and suggested she was in a car accident. Later he claimed he didn’t remember committing the crime despite these clear signs of lucid intent.GLAD calls it “inhumane” that he not be housed with the female prison population.There are countless other male rapists, murderers and brutalizers of women who say they belong in the female prison population. It’s not fair to women to allow for this precedent just because there are a small number of transwomen who will do no harm. Women don’t deserve exposure to sick male sociopaths just because they’re prisoners any more than men deserve rape just because they’re prisoners.Support prison reform, support economic reform, see the abuses of the sex industry for what they are, see the violence and entitlement engendered in men by our society for what it is. -- source link
