eastiseverywhere:ancientart:The Temple of Bacchus at Baalbek, Lebanon, ca. 150 AD. This stunning Roman temple, still very well preserved, is actually larger than the Parthenon of Athens.Photos courtesy of Varun Shiv Kapur. The site, Baalbek, was conquered by Alexander the Great in 334 BCE, and it was named under the Greek name of Heliopolis (City of the Sun). In the years after that, it was variously colonised by the Romans, the early Muslims, the Byzantines, the Seljuks, the Zengids, the Ayyubids, the Crusaders, the Mongols, the Mamluks and the Ottomans before becoming Lebanese. Oh yeah, and Israeli helicopters raided a hospital there in 2006. Rather contested, that place. -- source link
