annaofcleves:✧ For the New Year festivities of 1541, Anna of Cleves gifted Henry VIII two great horses caparisoned in purple velvet with trappings to match, preceding her appearance at Hampton Court on the 3rd of January. When she met the Queen, Anna approached her ‘with as much reverence and punctilious ceremony as if she herself were the most insignificant damsel about Court, all the time addressing the Queen on her knees, notwithstanding the prayers and entreaties of the latter, who received her most kindly, showing her great favour and courtesy.’ At this time the King entered the room and made a very low bow to Anna, embraced and kissed her, before the three of them dined; all the time Anna kept ‘as good a mien and countenance, and looking as unconcerned as if there had been nothing between them.’ After dining and conversing, Henry retired to his apartments early whilst Anna and Katheryn ‘danced together, and then separately.’ On the next day the three dined together once more, along with much ‘conversation, amusement, and mirth’. When the King retired to his apartments early, as the night before, the ladies danced together again. Later on, Henry sent Katheryn presents of ‘a ring and two small dogs’, which she kindly passed over to Anna. After a tiresome day, Anna retired to her apartments and two hours later she mounted her horse to return to Richmond. -- source link
