For the thirty-three months its doors were open, Studio 54 was synonymous with celebrity. Artists, actors, models, musicians, and even authors were photographed in the club at a time when magazines and TV were cultivating public interest in stars of all kinds. And the stars didn’t just party at Studio 54, they also took it as their stage. With performances by Studio regulars like Grace Jones and Liza Minelli, as well as a rotation of top-level DJs, the club was at the forefront of ‘70s culture and music. Hits like Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive"—championed by Richie Kaczor, a weekend DJ at Studio 54—climbed the charts from the discotheque to mainstream recognition.
