penroseparticle:yougottaletitout:Where is love?Does it fall from skies above? Is it underneath the willow tree, that I’ve been dreaming of?This is the introduction of two things: a. Teachers at McKinley all seem to suckb. Rachel Berry With the exception of the lady who auditions in Dream On, we don’t really see 1-scene characters sing outside of Hank’s performance. And it really isn’t Hank’s performance to begin with. Although the overall theme of the song is the lack of (and search for) love, which suits a show about underdogs finding their place in the world, it’s really Rachel’s song. Later Rachel says: “I want to clear up that hateful rumor that I was the one who turned that closet-case Sandy Ryerson in because he gave Hank Saunders the solo I deserved.”Knowing Rachel, that was exactly her intent. It’s her solo. She overprojects on any song she sings. Rachel may be ego-centric, but she’s also very lonely. She doesn’t have a real friend until Duets, she doesn’t think she’s worth anything if she can’t sing… There’s a scene in Preggers where Will tells her that at times he’s ‘her only fan’ which is about the nicest way you can phrase ‘nobody likes you.’ At this point in the show Rachel seems fine being on her own, but as we can later see, she does latch onto anyone who might like her. (Goes for both Jesse and Finn, but you can also see it in the way she keeps asking verification that Quinn and her are friends.)This song is from Oliver! which is based on Oliver Twist. The sheetmusic to this song makes its comeback in The Power Of Madonna, right before Rachel and Finn lie about the proceedings of their respective dates. you’re a genius -- source link
