Taught at home during his developmental years as he was tested in his intelligence and comprehension. He had no experience in classroom settings or a wider range of children beyond his family and Victor Trevor. After Victor vanished, Sherlock went into denial. Convinced, even as everyone else began to realise otherwise, that Victor was going to turn up on his parents doorstep after just getting lost and losing track of the time while playing in the woods. Thinking that he was still playing and that any moment “Redbeard, that scurvy dog” was going to show up like he always did. After the fire that consumed their family home, The Holmes moved and sent Sherlock to private school. However, the effects of the events had taken root inside of the young boy, and not long afterwards, Sherlock had a full trauma response take over his life. One day, Sherlock simply stopped talking.Nothing could prompt him to speak. Teachers, classmates, family and doctors all failing to trigger him to speak. Yelling, bargaining, and begging all failed. Having become selectively mute for over a year; he had to be briefly pulled out of school and placed into specialist care; something that would haunt him for the rest of his pre-university days by the mockery of other children, first earning him the title: FREAK. During this time, Sherlock’s mind was struggling to cope and come to terms with things — rewriting itself as he sat in silence. Not always showing sign that he was aware of his surroundings. The only sign of life that came from him most days was his violin. He had even stopped dancing after month four. Playing a mix of compositions and his own “free play” to express and communicate in ways he didn’t know how to verbalize. Countless doctors looked at him, before ending up in an psychiatric children’s hospital for a couple months. His silence was broken when one day he heard news of a boy name Carl Powers, who had drowned. Something about this triggered his speech and obsession. Once released, his parents sent him back to school. He seemed to have little recollection of what had happened and he was told (at recommendation by a doctor) that he had been unwell after the fire but he was better now. He picked up everything as if no time had passed, but it was clear to everyone that his memories (and by extension, himself) were not right. Living far from Musgrave Hall, it was decided that it would be best to not stir the memories as it might be too traumatic for him unless he awoke them himself. He even picked up old hobbies again, including dance.Sherlock remained in private school until graduation where he was accepted into Oxford University to study chemistry. Sherlock stayed for two years before dropping out due to his addiction and subsequent rehab stint. Upon discharge, Sherlock was released into the hands of family and a condition of being allowed to stay and be supported was that he finished his education. After pulling some strings, Sherlock eventually completed his studies at Cambridge University — he managed surprisingly well considering he had slipped back into “controlled usage”. Crediting his “skillful” balance of Morphine and Cocaine to obtaining his degree ahead of schedule. -- source link
