Happy birthday to artist Lonnie Holley, who was born on this day in 1950. Assembled here are weapons collected by Holley’s neighbor, Mrs. Smith, to protect herself against potential intruders. Holley believes that where and how objects are presented can change their meaning. By removing the weapons from the owner’s home after she moved away, then transferring them to an artistic setting and giving them a title, the artist conceived a monument to the strength and wisdom of Black women like Mrs. Smith.See this work on view now in “Ghosts and Fragments.”“Protecting Myself the Best I Can (Weapons by the Door),” 1994, by Lonnie Holley © Lonnie Holley / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York.
