Gorgeous Girl Group 1960s Glamour: Supreme GlamourMary Wilson of The Supremes wrote this book with Mark Bego to give an account of “the original pop fashionistas” as she puts it. Wilson explains what they wore from their very beginnings as a very young girl group hoping to make records to the height of their fame as the most commercially successful of the Motown groups. I found myself humming “Where Did Our Love Go” and “You Can’t Hurry Love” as I turned these pages. The matching ensembles became more and more spectacular as their success increased. The book contains many pictures of the outfits, and some closeups as you see here, of the embellishments. You see at top pantsuits from their trip to Europe in 1964-1965, then pink dresses from PAB for Saks Fifth Avenue with a close-up of the paillette sequins on the bodice of the gowns. Attached only a one point on the discs, these were shimmer and sparkle as the group moved on stage. Then white evening gowns again with matching boleros, this time embellished with beading and mink from Jacobson’s department store in Detroit. Glamour became one their hallmarks. Eventually they were having costumes specially made for them and most of the book is taken up with these images of the costumes alone or worn on stage or for photography stills. It is an inspiring set of images if you are interested in costuming for the stage or for eveningwear from the 1960s and 1970s. You can see the more formal dresses morph into psychadelic 1970s jumpsuits. Diana Ross would go on as a solo performer in the 1970s. The Supremes’ members had evolved before then and would do so until they disbanded in 1977. Mary Wilson wrote her best-selling memoir Dream Girl in 1986. She died earlier this month, February 2021.
