weirdpolis:Michał Derus - silver medal for Poland at the Paralympic Games in Rio 2016Fifth medal for Poland, won on Sunday. Michał Derus run the 100 m sprint with time 10,79 s - between two great brazilian sprinters who took gold and bronze medals. This was a debut for Derus at paralympics, as for years he wasn’t allowed to compete in such events - up until 2013 there was no class that would suit his disability - the lack of hand. He spent almost five years competing against able-bodied sportsmen - he had been placed between 7-14 at various Polish Championships as his arm affected the balance during run and made proper start difficult. But 2013 came and a new class for sportsmen like him was organised, he immediately won World Championships. He’s glad he survived that time and kept on running - and now he can enjoy this medal. I don’t know what to say. Finally came this moment when I have no words. This is a dream come true - he said after the win. He thanked his coach and also his history teacher from middle school, who had encouraged him to try sports. -- source link
