Nelson’s Pillar, 1966, DublinBuilt in 1809, this monument to Nelson caused anger from the outset, and calls for its removal grew during the 19th century. An attempt to destroy it during the Easter Rising of 1916 failed. As with more recent events in Bristol, the statue remained as repeated attempts to remove it or replace the statue and dedication “legally”, failed.1966 was the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising, which led an Irish Republican activist to carry out "Operation Humpty Dumpty" overnight.
