Navy yeoman pose with their service rifles, World War I. During the war the US Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard accepted women for active duty service. They received the same benefits as men, including identical pay (US$28.75 per month), and were treated as veterans after the war. Most served clerical roles or as Marine reservists to free up men for frontline combat. Over 13,000 women would enlist in the three services. -- source link
