theskylinesblog: Cathedral Of The Holy Cross And Saint Eulalia“Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, seat of the Archdiocese of Barcelona and Gothic cathedral of the city. The cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, in Gothic style as a whole, was built between the 13th and 15th centuries on the pre-existing Romanesque cathedral, built, in turn, on the previous Paleo-Christian one. However, the current facade, designed by the architect Josep Oriol Mestres, is in neo-Gothic style, because it was not built until the 19th century, on the initiative of the developer Manuel Girona on the occasion of the 1888 Universal Exhibition. Consecrated to the Holy Cross initially, around the 7th century, something unusual in Christendom, it‘s also dedicated to Saint Eulalia, a martyr of the Roman era and patron saint of Barcelona before she was the Virgin of La Mercè. The cathedral presides over the Gothic Quarter, in the Old Town, and is photographed from Passeig de Miramar, on the mountain of Montjuïc, at the height of Carlos Ibáñez Square”.
