wonszu:Turoń - creature you can meet during Christmas Eve in PolandLittle something something I drew. Turoń is a horned creature with hanging tongue and furry back, it’s skull is covered with tough skin. It’s wide mouth snaps making a sharp sound.During Christmas Eve in Poland carollers are going from home to home singing carols. They are also dressing in specific way - there is always someone dressed as a devil, an angel, a shepherd and one person is carrying a Bethlehem star, which colourful and placed on a long stake, from where it can be rotated. The most interesting is Turoń. One person hidden under a ram fur is carrying a head of Turoń and sometimes a bell on it’s “neck”. During visiting homes “Turoń” behaves like an animal, scaring children and woman by snapping it’s moving mouth, dancing in the rhythm of music ringing it’s bell. In the most important end “turoń” falls down dead and everybody tries to wake it up giving it water or making charms. Then finally Turoń wakes up and dances again. It’s a symbol of death and rebirth of the earth during winter and spring. It’s specifically a very old slavic tradition that survived Christianization.Motive of Turoń inspired me to make a “living” creature out of it.Wonszu, 2014 -- source link
