occupyallstreets:Obama Moves G-8 From Chicago to Camp David: “Occupy Camp David” Explodes on TwitterIn a move that some are saying is a response to fears over massive Occupy protests, Obama announced Monday that he would be moving May’s G-8 summit from downtown Chicago to the rural presidential fortress of Camp David.“They are running scared from the people,” tweeted @OccupyWallStreetNYC.The G-8 has a reputation for drawing giant crowds of violent protesters, and news of growing Occupy protests surely sparked fears over a repeat of the 1999 WTO protests in Seattle, also called “The Battle of Seattle.” Adbusters, one of the organizations that helped launch Occupy Wall Street, had been recruiting huge numbers of protesters to gather in Chicago to protest the summit — Chicago Police were estimating 2,000 – 10,000, reports the Chicago Tribune. The NATO summit will still be happening during the same time, but the G-8 is historically a huge event for protesters. This move both puts a wrench in their plans and creates a giant amount of momentum without anywhere to go.Almost immediately after the announcement, the #OccupyCampDavid hashtag began appearing on twitter.Twitter users have been having a fun time recommending a “lovely camping trip in May” and making jokes about camping and tents, but despite the posturing, the logistical nightmare of marshalling protesters anywhere close to Camp David will severely confine any kind of protest. Elite marine patrols wouldn’t help either.Occupy may have faded from the public consciousness after the initial camps were broken up one by one, but as the weather thaws, Occupy is gearing up for a renewed spring of protests. The G-8 summit was meant to be one of the largest demonstrations, but certainly not the only one.Source -- source link
