uwmspeccoll:Pesach Greetings!Passover began at sundown last evening. To commemorate the 2020 Passover season, we present a selection of pages from this is a facsimile edition of the Venice Haggadah printed in 1609 by Israel ben-Daniel ha-Zifroni, one of the three earliest, illustrated, printed Haggadot. This facsimile, however, is reproduced from a unique printing of the Venice Haggadah–a single copy from the edition especially printed on vellum by Gershon Prinz for his own use, and currently preserved in the Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem. Prinz would later become a Venetian publisher in his own right beginning in 1629. This facsimile copy contains an additional frontispiece which does not exist in other copies of the Venice Haggadah. This frontispiece includes a rhymed riddle that alludes to the date of publication to be found in Gershon Prinz’s name–1609. Prinz’s copy is not well preserved, so for this facsimile the damaged pages from the Prinz copy were replaced by others from an incomplete copy preserved in the Bezalel Art section of the Israel Museum. It is not known who the designer or artists were, but it appears that they were well-versed in the tradition of Jewish illuminated books.View our previous Passover posts. -- source link
