This entry in my bad 80s movie quest is a real treat. 1989′s “The Road Raiders” was shown on TV as a two-hour special that was intended to be a pilot for a series. It didn’t do well and disappeared forever until someone uploaded it to Youtube.A blatant rip-off of the A-Team, it follows a rag-tag group of military misfits who are stuck behind enemy lines and must cobble together aircraft parts to help some nuns and orphans escape. There’s the gruff older sargent, the muscley twins, the black guy named “Harlem” who makes sound effects with his mouth, the shrimpy guy with too much bravado, the nerd, and a classy character named “Schizoid” who goes from being Ed Wynn to Rambo every time he hears a bell ring. This movie features Tia Carrere in a very early role as well as the great John Fujioka from American Ninja. It’s about as culturally sensitive as you’d expect an 80s movie to be, which is to say it’s cringeworthy. But the vehicles are great and presumably this would be a difficult burden on the production to build a different car each episode. These cars were on display at Universal Studios at least up until the 90s. -- source link
