In one example, the urban realist Everett Shinn used pastel to capture a wet New York day in 1910. He masterfully rendered a couple in black fighting the wind and rain with their umbrella as they walk toward the Flatiron Building at Fifth Avenue and Twenty-third Street, seen at upper left.
