Cacao Pods (Theobroma cacao), United States Botanic Garden, Washington, DC, 2014.In addition to the tragic deaths of thousands, the ebola epidemic is ravaging the economies of several west African countries where much of the world’s cacao has been grown and exported to chocolate makers. It seems likely the supply of the beans will be badly curtailed for the foreseeable future as transportation links are tenuous and the labor force has been decimated. That could well lead to scarcity and much higher prices for the favorite candy ingredient. -- source link
