doctorwho247:Writer Gareth Roberts has explained why First Doctor companion Ian Chesterton didn’t make an appearance in ‘The Caretaker’, despite the character’s appointment to Chairman of the Governors.Speaking to CultBox, Roberts said: “I just thought [including Ian] would be too much of a distraction. I think that’s an episode all of its own. I thought, particularly after the 50th, where there were lots of references to past Doctor Who, sometimes you need to just put your foot on the accelerator and keep going forward.”However, the writer did hint at the character returning in the future: “I’d love to see William Russell [who plays Ian] back in the show! That’s so rich and so fertile for someone to do. You’d have to explain it enough so that everyone would get it.”He added: “There’s a tiny reference to that first year of Doctor Who in ‘The Caretaker’ which is the Coal Hill motto, on the wall of the parent’s evening: “a great spirit of adventure”, which is what the Doctor says about Ian and Barbara in ‘The Sensorites’. I thought that was a nice nod in the background.”I love Gareth Roberts because he wrote my favorite episode (The Unicorn and the Wasp) but oh my god I wish I hadn’t seen this post because it’s only upset me more. So the reason they haven’t brought back IAN. CHESTERTON. despite having two characters who work at Coal Hill and tons of scenes set there is not that William Russell didn’t want to or couldn’t come back, it’s because Ian would be too much of a distraction? I’m eight thousand percent willing to be distracted. It could only have been an improvement. And “the 50th, where there were lots of references to past Doctor Who” must not be the same 50th I watched. And this still doesn’t explain why from the 50th through The Caretaker no one has made a single clear reference to Ian, Barbara, or Susan. Would a line mentioning Ian’s name really have been too distracting, even if he didn’t appear? God, I sound so much more collected than I am, but that’s only because I’m too frustrated to express how frustrated I am. This implies that reuniting the Doctor with one of his first companions ever was an option but Moffat and Roberts just decided it wasn’t worth it? They had a whole 45-minute episode set at Coal Hill but they decided not to waste five seconds on a line acknowledging Ian and/or Barbara and/or Susan? WHERE ARE YOUR PRIORITIES YOU GUYS??? UGH I’M SO UPSET I WANT TO SMASH SOMETHING. -- source link
