A late 10th century miniature from the Gospel’s of Otto III. This richly decoreted book was probably made in 998 and given to Emperor Otto III who was a grandson of Otto the Great. In the paintings Rome, Gallia, Germania nad Slavonia are adoring the emperor who is sitting on a throne. Like his grandfather Otto was a strong ruler who conquested inter alia Rome a couple of times and dethroned a few popes in the process. He also tried to increase Germany’s influence in Eastern Europe with some success. For example in Hungary he crowned Stephen I as the first Christian king of the country. Otto’s career was cut short though since he died of fever then he was only 21 years old. The young emperor succumbed in Civita Castellana while returning from one of his military campaigns in Italy. This was a malaria infested region so Otto might be one of the most famous victims of this disease. -- source link
