mrkinch:jabletown:trobador:xavierstea:You’re among friends now, Hank. It’s interesting that although it is easily within Charles’ power to solve the problem immediately - wipe the memory from the minds of everyone but Raven and let Hank come out on his own terms, he chooses not to. The role and intentions of the CIA are not clear, and they are a possible threat to mutants, including Charles, Hank, and the others. Charles’ choice rather conveys his perception of his position of power: should crap hit the fan, he is confident he would be able deal with it (including emerging unscathed and ensuring the safety of others). He does not bother with immediate damage control, even though it would have been safer, more efficient, kinder to Hank and more socially acceptable - the polite thing to do. He doesn’t bother to use his telepathy now because he is confident that he has the power to make any eventuality right. That actually says a lot about Charles’ previous life and habits, his role in power relationships with other people, as well as his previous use of telepathy. Charles is used to be the one with power, and it is channelled through his manner, attitude and choices. This is everything I believe about XMFC Charles. And why it makes total sense to me that he could be a drugged out looking greasy shitshow even 10 years later for DOFP.#in fact i think his deterioration was delayed#that immediately after the events of xmfc he tried desperately to rebound#and act like the same confident powerful person he’d always thought himself to be#but then other things happened#other things that clearly demonstrated his insecureties and failures#and he just spiralled#i also very very hope he’s developed serious issues about even using his telepathyIn that light- what does it mean that he knows he can hold a person so still that he can look into his own death? It’s possible to argue that he becomes reluctant about using his telepathy; otoh, the whole experience of knowing he is powerful but frustrated by all the ways that he is not automatically seen as such might inspire him to channel his power in different, clandestine, and potentially more disturbing ways.
