Manicules, or the hand shaped symbols placed in the margins to point out corrections, are some of the most interesting forms of punctuation originating in the medieval period. This Florilegium, LJS 477, is a collection of sermons, probably compiled from multiple sources, belonging to a Dominican preacher. it was written in England, perhaps at the Dominican Convent in Oxford, in ca. 1250. Fols. 29r and 31v contain examples of manicules, and if you take a closer look at the manuscript you will find that it has been heavily commented upon in the margins. To see more please turn to the manuscript description and digitized images on OPenn; http://openn.library.upenn.edu/Data/LJSchoenbergManuscripts/html/ljs477.html -- source link
