Turf, with Jockey up, at NewmarketGeorge Stubbs (British; 1724–1806)ca. 1766Oil on canvasYale Center for British Art, New Haven, ConnecticutThis racehorse portrait was painted for one of Stubbs’s best early patrons, the young Whig aristocrat Frederick St. John, 2nd Viscount (“Bully”) Bolingbroke. Lord Bolingbroke owned some of the most successful racehorses of the day, including the famous Gimcrack. The alert, if somewhat nonchalant, jockey wears Bolingbroke’s colors, but his identity is unknown. -- source link
