It clearly was designed for a very particular use, but that has been lost to us. It seems like it might have set inside of a larger vessel, perhaps a bowl, with those hook things resting on the edges. They very definitely look made to rest on something. Nevermind I can’t think of a good reason for doing that (some kind of dye process?). If I had access to it, I’d like to check for signs of wear on the sides of the undercones beneath the hooks. -- source link
