arbuthnotblob:Decided I should finally expose my undying love for Marcus Tullius Cicero, who is currently chilling on the floor of my student flat as he is 18 ½ kilograms too heavy for all my furniture!I blame A-Level Classical Civilisation. Which was over 4 years ago. I mean, if I met Cicero today I’d probably find him intolerable, but his letters give such an insight into him as a human being, and all the links between his life 2000 years ago and life now. And he tried so hard to save the Republic against really terrible odds, rose to the top of an elitist society through sheer skill and had such affection for his friends and family. Not to mention he laid down some sick burns, Against Verres is pure fire and the greatest piece of tactical lawyering given the situation.Shout out to the Waterstones on Gower Street, London, which has a wicked basement full of second-hand books. I would have purchased their entire shelf of various Cicero volumes if not for the fact most were entirely in Latin. As it was I restrained myself to both volumes of Letters to Friends and a nice red bound copy of the Philippics. tl;dr I have feelings about this ridiculous man who is currently taking up too much space on my floor. Hm… alicui Ciceronem valdissime placere puto. -- source link
