Another shrinking mountainThis image shows a lake at the foot of Aoraki (also known as Mt. Cook), the tallest mountain in New Zealand.A few years ago, if you’d checked the listings online for this mountain, or if you checked a previously-published book, its height would be listed at 3754 meters (12,316 feet). Over the past week, the mountain suddenly shrank by 30 meters, to a height of 3724.This mountain has shrunk before. In 1991, the peak was listed as 3764 meters tall until a giant avalanche took away the uppermost 10 meters. However, nothing as stunning as that happened recently; the mountain was simply remeasured. Using GPS technology, a group from the University of Otago visited the summit and found that the peak was in fact 30 meters (99 feet) shorter than previous measurements had determined.-JBBImage credit: Stu (creative commons license)http://www.flickr.com/photos/16693201@N00/2154268226/Press report:http://m.livescience.com/42610-new-zealand-aoraki-mount-cook-shrinks.html?cmpid=514645That time when Denali also shrank:https://www.facebook.com/TheEarthStory/posts/570353933025655 -- source link
