redsamuraiii:“I was once your age, you know. Hone your skills, then go to war and do great things. Then become lord of your own castle and domain. But as you dream those dreams, before you know it, your hair will turn as grey as mine. By that time you’ve lost your parents and you’re all alone.”One of the saddest scene to me in this film. I guess, it’s more sad when you grow older and realized you’re nowhere near when you first set out to accomplish. Such is life. We all begin our lives with hopes and aspirations. Among these aspirations is the desire to that there will be a straight path to those goals. Sometimes the turns are of one’s own volition, as one’s thoughts and goals change over time but often times, the turns are mandated by outside forces beyond our control. Kambei Shimada is my favorite character of the film as despite his difficult past, he managed to remain calm in the face of adversity, failures and rejection. He managed to let go of his past goals and wander about to find his place in the world. Something which most Samurai or Ronin failed to do as depicted in the film, with their high expectations and excessive pride that is killing them inside making them angry and discontented all the time, unlike Kambei who seems to be at peace with himself. -- source link
