It was Dan’s idea. Neither of us had a car so Dan lent us his. We had been together for months; going for walks, stargazing from the dock, telling each other secrets in our tent at night, but had never been on a date. That morning we got up in the dark and grabbed left over hot dogs from the kitchen. We drove the few miles to the mountain and didn’t encounter another soul as we ascended above the fog. At the top we shivered under blankets from the October chill. We watched the sun rise as the fog slowly dissipated below us revealing trees that looked like a watercolor painting in deep greens and browns and reds. It was our first date. And our last date. We hiked back down and drove home. And then I drove to a new home as a distance of six years and a thousand miles came crashing down between us. -- source link
