spurlaut:1/??? in my dachshund coat color/pattern series!! Canine coat color is a complex, polygenic trait but is easy to understand once you know what you’re looking at. I’m going to keep the diagrams and descriptions fairly simple; if you have any questions or want further clarification, please do not hesitate to ask me!Pheno = phenotype, the visible/expressed characteristic. Geno = genotype, the combination of alleles/what’s actually in the DNA. Phenotypes can be observed, whereas genotypes are unknown unless a) tested for or b) the particular phenotype can only be seen with a certain genotype.This covers the B (liver/chocolate) and D (dilution) loci. These genes follow the rules of classical/Mendelian genetics: dominant > recessive, and they assort independently. The recessive form of the B gene changes black to chocolate. The recessive form of the D gene either dilutes black to blue, or dilutes chocolate to isabella, depending on what the dog’s base color is.
