annagetsthefabulousbabes:cabell:spinfrog:haabibaah:antiporn-activist:something to think about.the narrative that centers veterans as the primary subjects of PTSD is a colonialist/imperialist narrative that values masculine warriors in service of empire. sexual and domestic violence, linked to patriarchy, is irrelevant.OK obviously there is a devaluing of certain groups going on in our society, but “colonialist/imperialist”? seriously? :/ People have raised the issue that PTSD is incredibly common for people in occupied territories. People who fly drones often develop PTSD, but how many PTSD cases result from those drones? The fact that we don’t usually include the many affected civilians in narratives about military PTSD absolutely is imperialist. We could respect the experiences of people in the military (who are often there in extremely coercive circumstances) while still recognizing the harm done to civilians, mainly people of color, but overwhelmingly we don’t. I had an actual argument with an actual historian about whether or not being a civilian in a war zone could possibly cause shell shock. We also argued about whether or not nurses could be traumatised during war.Note, we weren’t discussing if sources on that would be hard to find. He must outright refused to believe any such thing could be true. -- source link
