museum-of-artifacts:The Temple of Garni (in Armenian: Գառնիի հեթանոսական տաճար, Gařnii het’anosakan tačar) is a Hellenic temple dating from the first century AD, and the only pagan temple in Armenia that survived the Christianisation of the country in the early 4th century. After being destroyed in the 17th century as the result of an earthquake, it was ultimately reconstructed on the orders of the Soviet Armenian government, at the behest of the architectural historian Alexander Sahinian, by 1974. The temple was almost entirely rebuilt using its original stones, except the missing pieces which were filled with unprocessed stones and are easily noticeable. A monument dedicated to Sahinian was erected in 1978 not far from the temple. The temple is also the only “Greco-Roman colonnaded building” in Armenia and the entire former Soviet Union. -- source link
