It is assumed she was assigned another job in UNIT.This is the first story to involve Parallel Universes.There was almost a fight between several writers to get the coveted "finale" story. Two other stories, The Mists of Madness and The Shadow People fell at the finale hurdle and this story, originally called The Mo-Hole Project was commissioned. The parallel universe aspect wasn’t added until a much later draft by Terrance Dicks as the mining storyline didn’t fill 7 episodes.Both Caroline John (Liz) and Nicholas Courtney (the Brig) have said this is their favourite story, and said that returning to playing the “good version” of their character wasn’t as interesting.At conventions, Nicholas Courtney used to affectionately and frequently tell a story in which everyone on set wore eyepatches when he was playing the “Evil Brig”. As a tribute to him, Steven Moffat included many scenes in The Wedding of River Song (also the story which explains the Brig’s death off screen) in which “everyone is wearing eye patches”.Caroline John was pregnant during filming of this story. -- source link
