Peltigera neckeriNecker’s felt lichen, Aufgedrehte BlätterschildflechteI added the German common name for P. neckeri because it is way cooler than the English common name. Sorry, it’s just the truth. The name translates to “unburnished leaf shield lichen” which is more badass than anything being called “Necker’s” anything. This foliose lichen grows in roundish patches between 10-20 cm in diameter. The lobes are smooth and flat, with undulating edges and tips. The surface is bluish-black when wet, and a more dull blue-gray or brown when dry. The lower surface is white around the edges, and lined with prominent veins, which darken toward the thallus center. It attaches to the substrate via irregular dark brown or black rhizines. It has great apothecia! Really, super cool. They are a large black disc which grows out of the lobe apices, and they tend to roll and become tubular and erect with age, looking like long, leafy coffee beans. P. neckeri grows on moss and moss-adjacent soil, rock, or wood in temperate and boreal regions in the northern hemisphere. images & info: source -- source link
