Taken by photographer/traveler John Chaney for the 2012 National Geographic Traveler photo contest, this incredible photograph comes with an even more touching story. The female elephant in this image, taken in 2007, stood guard over the body of her beloved friend for hours to pay her final respects, chasing off birds and predators from the body. In a final goodbye, she wrapped her trunk around the other’s tusk in a heartbreaking moment of respect. -- source link
