Because we are trained in a system founded in white supremacy that strongly parallels the institution of policing.The higher education industrial complex - and the education industrial complex as a whole in the United States - is founded in white supremacy.The higher education industrial complex began in the 1600’s. European colonizers stole the land currently called the United States. Their outlook generated Harvard college in 1636 - only white christian males were allowed to enroll. In order to receive financial support, the colleges made the point that “missionary’s would be available to convert Indigenous folx to Christianity” - which in reality was a genocide involving family separation, children being kidnapped and forced into residential schools, and mass murder.All that to say - western models of social work, counseling, psychology, psychiatry, and medicine have the same roots as policing, prisons, and the entire United States.The Mental health industrial complex in this country has a dark foundation and history that continues still today. Many folx have been been harmed by these systems - in particular Black folx, Indigenous folx, People of color, trans folx, queer folx, fat folx - anyone with oppressed identities.
