house-of-crows:petermorwood:wearepaladin:First they must catch you byEran FowlerAll the world will be your enemy, Prince With A Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first, they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.“This is amazing art - click on the link to see it much larger and appreciate the detail - but because I’m in editing mode I have one quibble. “Watership Down” is set in England, with a cast of rabbits, so their culture hero El-Ahrairah is also a rabbit. There’s even a line in the book proving the characters are one, not the other: This is a rabbit. This is a hare.If El-Ahrairah wasn’t based on that photo (look at the ear-tips and various other details) it was one very like it, and my guess is that the artist - from British Columbia, according to ArtStation - was thinking of Jackrabbits, which are hares, rather than Cottontails which are rabbits. Indeed, compare the corner cartouches……to the old Irish threepenny coin, which is definitely a hare.Several reviews of last year’s CGI series pointed out the same thing: that the characters were too obviously hares, not rabbits. On one side of the production, Netflix had the same North American excuse, but on the other - it was a BBC co-production - someone on the British side really should have known better.Me quibbling about details doesn’t affect the overall quality of the picture, which as mentioned right at the start is A1 - so are the other illustrations at the link! It’s just another entry on the Same Word Other Meaning list along with biscuits, chips, braces, vest, fanny, suspenders, robin, pants, jelly, tramp, football, bum, pint… :->It’s because Hares at least look like they’re creatures out of myth and you could quite easily see any of them bloody and screaming-rabbits not so much. We see this across multiple fandoms as well, including the most noteworthy Redwall series by deceased author Brian Jacques. (Rest in peace, you are sorely missed.) Even the art from the original animated series had this issue: Hazel and Fiver, vs the Efrafans. And let’s not forget the Black Rabbit, either! My tattoo is art ripped from the end of the movie only slightly redrawn. The Black Rabbit of Inle looks rather like a hare, wouldn’t you agree….? If even the original animated movie has this issue, I think we can let artists have a break, Peter. -- source link
