stephiramona: The tale of two cities according to Heiko and Stephi - Part 337 Today is a holiday in Germany. It is the day of German unity. After WWII the country was divided into (West) Germany and DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik = German Democratic Republic). Berlin was still the capital city, and was also divided into West- and East Berlin. Berlin, despite West Berlin belonging to West Germany, was located in the area of the DDR, and so was he “heart of the DDR”. A wall was built to divide east and west. For more than 28 years, many families were separated and couldn’t see each other. Many people risked their lives to flee from the DDR into the west. When on November, 9th 1989 the wall finally “fell”, and the borders were opened again, families were able to reunite and to see each other again. Eleven months later, Germany reunited. And this certainly was one of the happiest moments in German history. Heiko’s and my picture are both from Berlin and not from our hometowns because no other city can show the time of division as good as Berlin can. On the first photo (taken by Heiko) you can see a piece of art on the “Eastside Gallery” in Berlin which was a part of the wall. The second photo shows “Deutsches Historisches Museum” (German history museum) with a sculpture of the German word ‘Einheit’ which means unity. -- source link
