every Roja x Rishi scene in Roja (1992) — 5/?Context: Roja is shocked, humiliated and angry at the stunt Rishi has just pulled off. Her aim has always been to pursue higher studies before even thinking about marriage. But now she feels trapped in an arrangement that puts her in all sorts of disadvantage (her first impressions about him be damned). Rishi, on the other hand, is extremely conflicted with the decision he’s just made for himself. Granted that it is his ultimate wish to marry a village girl, and everything about the village enchants him, but after getting an earful from the elders of the village for putting on a “shamless” and “atrocious” act (“you had come here to marry the elder sister and now you say you want to marry the younger one, do you think it’s fair, son?” they lamented before him), his resolve seems to be broken. On one side, he is trying to honour Roja’s elder sister’s request, but on the other side, he wants to fulfill the task he’s come here to achieve. We begin to see similarities between Roja and Rishi from here on out: a) both are simple at heart in that Roja has grown up amidst the simple village life, while Rishi is drawn to the simplicity of the life here, despite being bred in the city; b) both give utmost importance to their family values; c) however they feel about a situation, they chew away their bitterness for the time being and contemplate things later on. There are also fundamental differences that we are shown here: a) Rishi is a mellow person, while Roja is quick to speak her mind; b) Rishi can, at times, be be filled with self-doubt, while Roja is resolute about what she wants from life.
