Cladonia boryiFishnet cladonia, Bory’s cup lichenYou can tell this is a cladonia lichen because of the podetia. What are podetia? Long, stem-like stalks that that support the apotehcial structures. They often grow in cup-shapes, but not so much in C. boryi. This fruticose lichen has thick podetia containing a net of soft, fiberous strands (unlike most cladonia which have more solid podetia), appearing net-like or spiderwebby. Small, bulbous apothecia are found at the multi-branching podetial tips. It grows on sandy soil along the coasts of northeastern North America, from Newfoundland down through Massachusetts. It is often confused with similar species like C. nipponica and C. kanewskii in other locations, so if you find this guy outside of the Atlantic northeast, either check that ID more closely or take some really good pictures!images: sourceinfo: source | source -- source link
