Maria, 36, of Jalapa, Mexico, started working as a nanny when she was 9 years old and had her first child at 17. After her son’s father went to the US in 2000 in search of better opportunities, she paid a smuggler to take her and her son across the border in 2007; it took her three attempts to cross without being detained.
