honorthegods:October Fragment of a mosaic with the months of the year. First half third century CE. Discovered in the city of Thysdrus, Roman province of Byzacena, (modern El Djem, Tunisia). Collection of the Archaeological Museum of Sousse. Photo credit: Euro Press. This panel depicts two men meeting, perhaps celebrating, under a star. October marked the end of both the Roman military year and the harvest. Of interest is that the star Spica (known as the “ear of wheat”) was prominent in the October sky and has been associated with the Mysteries of Mithras, popular with Roman soldiers. Another theory is that this panel celebrates the October birthday of the Emperor Alexander Severus, and depicts the brilliant star said to have shown in the sky throughout the day of his birth. -- source link
