Our Lady of the LavasDuring the 1977 eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano on Reunion Island, the village of Piton Sainte Rose was evacuated while a flow of molten basalt swept over several houses. The highway that rings the island was cut, and the flow was heading towards the church. It reached the doors as you see, but then halted.
