uwmspeccoll:Fine Press Friday: In Memoriam Walter HamadyThe great Wisconsin book artist, letterpress printer, fine press publisher, hand papermaker, collage artist, and book-arts educator Walter Hamady died on his birthday, September 13, 2019. He was 79 years old. Those who knew him might find it fitting that he came into this world on Friday the 13th and he departed on Friday the 13th; not because he had bad luck, but because of his wily and irascible character. In his memory we present Walter's Papermakingby Hand: A Book of Suspicions. It isBook No. 102 from Hamady’s PerishablePress Limited, printed in Perry Township, Dane County, Wisconsin in1982 in an edition of 200 copies on a variety of his own Shadwell handmade papers. It is illustrated with 3 images from Diderot’s Encyclopédieand 12 original linoleum cuts by his book-arts colleague and former student Jim Lee made specifically for this book. The text was handset in Hermann Zapf’sPalatino typeface.WalterHamady wrote in the introduction:Papermakingis essentially a craft. It can be a highly artistic craft of course, where anartist is making paper. It is a means to an end and can be exquisitely beautiful. It can play an essential part in the total expression of the graphic arts –though, as it is taken so much for granted, too often does not. Truly, finepapermaking is many things or it is only high-class Kleenex, depending on one’sinterest and sensitivity to an absolute and critical element.Papermakingby hand need not pose any ominous-mystifying-mumbo-jumbo problem beyondsecuring the necessary heavy equipment. The manufacture of handmade paperrequires only dexterous love & a willing sacrospinalis. A great Americanpapermaker is said to have said that “any damn fool can make paper.” I take hisword for it, because here I am having made some myself.View more posts about the workof WalterHamady.Viewmore FinePress Friday posts.–Sarah,Special Collections Graduate Intern -- source link
