This afternoon I discovered my new favourite activity, which is removing rusted out snap buttons and replacing them with shiny new ones. It’s just a pity that there are so few snap buttons in my life. These pannier bags have suffered a lot in the last seven years, and by winter’s end they were finally unusable, with three or four large holes in the bottom of each compartment and brassed buttons so rusted that they would no longer button. I cut up an old pair of black jeans and sewed patches over the holes—slowly, untidily, but reasonably effectively. I bought new buttons from local fabric shop and drilled out the old ones before hammering in their replacements. The functional transformation is dramatic and beautiful. *snap snap* Nobody could mistake these for new pannier bags, but they work like new again. -- source link
