mroverstanding:“The Ivory Bangle Woman”, so called because of the jewelry she was buried with, was seemingly one of the wealthiest women in Eboracum, or Roman York (UK). Archaeologists have recently proved that she was African.A minor correction: The authors of the paper characterize her as mixed-race. The really surprising thing about this discovery isn’t her race, though. It was already thought there were other races in fourth-century, Roman England. But it was believed they were mainly male, and brought as an exclusively labor class. So you have here a very young woman, doing quite well, who it seems grew up somewhere else, possibly Northern Africa, and for some reason she’s living the life in a legionary territory! We have no idea who she is, but just by the fact that someone like her exists, it appears more likely that our conception of that time and place is incomplete not just in complexion, but breadth of experience.I hunted down the paper for you fuckers. No paywall. Human language, not tiringly long. http://centaur.reading.ac.uk/17041/1/M_Lewis_Bangle_Lady.pdf -- source link
