The Hukou Waterfall This lovely photo shows the Hukou waterfall on China’s Yellow River (Huang He) under the influence of “winter”. The Hukou waterfall is the second largest in China. It is located along the boundaries of Shanxi and Shaanxi Provinces, where the river approaches Hukou Mountain. The river is forced into a narrow channel by topography at this point, causing the water to pick up speed at the location of the current falls, which have a vertical drop of about 20 meters. The waterfall’s name translates as “Flask mouth”, due to the channeling at this location. The falls are still flowing, but in winter the water which splashes and sprays upwards accumulates on the nearby rocks and starts to freeze as it drips downwards, freezing a portion of the falls in place for the winter. The falls recently opened for tourists in winter for the first time, allowing pictures like this to be taken by all. -JBB Image credit: China Daily/Xinhua news servicehttp://www.chinadaily.com.cn/travel/2013-12/13/content_17172125_4.htmhttp://www.travelchinaguide.com/attraction/shaanxi/yanan/hukou_waterfall.htmhttp://www.chinaculture.org/gb/en_travel/2003-09/24/content_35829.htm -- source link
