Poynter was gonna pay for me to go to the Science Writers conference in Colorado, and I’d have so much to learn and people to meet and job prospects to improve. Once when I went, I literally spent $500 of the only $537 in my account, so this time was going to be much less stressful. But look at this country. The red is “high transmission” according to the CDC, There is a vaccine and mask mandate for the conference, and some of it is outside, but tbh there are also enough breakthrough delta cases to be worrisome. The United States is overall “very high” and CDC recommends avoiding areas with “very high” transmission, such as the US. I am a little sad to reject this really great opportunity when I know other people are still going on vacations. I even know someone who goes on international vacations every single month (including now) because she got so much money from local mutual aid funds across the country, she’s just gotta spend it on something (other than charity, of course.)Of course I can’t complain too much about people trying to enjoy their lives, I wouldn’t ask someone to justify every little expenditure and risk, or travel necessities. We all break health recommendations from time to time. We all made sacrifices and probably deserve vacay time. I was even close to accepting this offer and maybe I should have! I just feel a little lame that I’m gonna stay home because I’m worried about increasing the demand and therefore workload of hotel/plane staff, but then of course I’ll be making it easier and cheaper for those who don’t really care that much to do what they want. What I’m saying is please pat me on the back ok and give me a science journalism job that starts in summer/fall 2022 thanksUPDATE: They moved the conference to all-virtual anyway sooo now I don’t feel so bad ahaha. I also wanted to include this info in case anyone is reading this thinking “why are science writers going to an in person conference?” Here’s hoping there’s no Iota variant or whatever in 2023! -- source link
