workingclasshistory:On this day, 8 May 1974, in India, the national railway strike started, involving 1.7 million workers, demanding higher wages and shorter working hours. The strike was brutally suppressed by Indira Gandhi’s government with thousands being sent to jail and losing their jobs. The strike lasted till 27 May 1974 and was called off without immediate success. The opposition leadership refused to call for a strike in solidarity with the railway workers.
