Tribune of the plebs - Lucius Appuleius Saturninus (d. December 100 BCE)A three times tribune of the plebs who tried to enact a social and agrarian reform but optimates resented fiercely his policies. Just like Gracchi brothers Saturninus was murdered by optimates. Admittedly, Saturninus and his companions were no saints either since they certainly broke electoral laws and also killed their rivals. The most famous victim is probably plebeian Gaius Memmius who was a candidate for consulship and who was beaten death by supporters of Saturninus and his associate Gaius Servilius Glaucia.Coin:* Rome, 104 BCE - issued by Saturninus* obverse - Roma; reverse Saturn driving a quadriga.Source:Classical Numismatic Group, Inc. http://www.cngcoins.com [CC BY-SA 3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/)] -- source link
